Plant Werx is setting up a base in the Singapore Manufacturing Innovation Centre (SMIC) in Guangzhou. Located at Ascendas OneHub GKC in the Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City (SSGKC), SMIC is a collaborative platform jointly created by IE Singapore and Ascendas-Singbridge where providers of advanced manufacturing solutions can partner with other like-minded innovative enterprises and co-create “smart factory” standards and solutions.

Here’s what Foong Yiew Ming, Managing Director of Plant Werx, shares about their plans in Guangzhou, China.

What innovations are you working on at SMIC?
SMIC is located in Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City, which is in the Guangzhou Development District. It is one of China’s top state-level development zones, which makes it a promising market for Plant Werx to extend our automation and integration services to the many manufacturing facilities there, for both local and foreign investors. Our expertise and specialty includes database systems, which is fast becoming a necessity in the manufacturing industry.

In your opinion, what is the role of automation in the modern day business?
In recent years, automation has become an integral part of any business in manufacturing. However, standalone automation can no longer fulfil the demands and needs of the modern day business – Database Systems are now vital to the industry survival. With seamless data from the shop floor to enterprise level, it will help management in making key decisions faster and more accurately.

What do you hope to achieve in SMIC / Guangzhou?
We hope to create and establish a branding presence in Guangzhou, and to be closer to our end customers to better serve them.

What are the determining factors in choosing the location for your company?
Ease of setup, the potential market for automation and integration services, and also the level of assistance rendered by government agencies are critical in determining the location for our company to be based.

The workspace of today has greatly evolved, from the cubicle setting to open concept and even co-working. What will be a productive workspace for your industry?
Flexible work-life balance is the key. A productive workspace for our engineers will ideally provide the option to work from anywhere in the world, including from home.
